Throughout Christian history, devout Christians have suffered unimaginable persecution. As attested to by Foxe's Book of Martyrs, many were martyred by diabolical methods dreamed up in the demented minds of Christ-hating fiends. Yet, the contemporary church, which is comprised mostly of casual churchgoers and carnal Christians, is smug in the false security of an erroneous belief that it is soon to be secretly snatched up out of the world and into the safety of Heaven before stubbing its toe on any end-time tribulation. How anyone in this day of shallow Christianity can confess such a belief with a straight face is beyond me.
