Anyone who believes in the theory of evolution is a fool. “Wait a minute,” you protest, “doesn’t the Bible prohibit us from calling people fools?” Yes (Matthew 5:22), but it is the Bible itself, not me, that calls evolutionists fools. The Bible says, “The fool has said in his heart that there is no God” (Psalm 14:1; 53:1). “But all evolutionists are not atheists,” you argue. True, but those who aren’t deny the truth of the Biblical God, the Creator of heaven and earth, in order to concoct a god of their own making who conforms to their cockamamie theory of evolution. Such man-made gods, according to Scripture, are no gods at all (Isaiah 37:19). Thus, either evolutionists are godless fools duped by what is falsely called science (1 Timothy 6:20) or the Bible is untrue.
Yesterday (Tuesday, December 20, 2005), Judge John Jones III issued his anxiously anticipated ruling in a case dubbed by the media “Scopes II.” According to Judge Jones, a Pennsylvania school board violated the constitutional separation of church and state—something neither found in the Constitution nor mandated by it—by requiring ninth-grade biology teachers in 2004 to include in their lessons on evolution a one-minute statement on intelligent design.
Not satisfied with his reprimand of the Pennsylvania school board, Judge Jones went on in his 139-page decision to unleash a fierce assault on intelligent design itself. In the mind of this judicial activist judge turned scientist turned theologian, intelligent design is a theory based on the unprovable existence of the Christian God. Therefore, intelligent design is neither science nor suitable for the public school classroom. But wait a minute; is all of this not equally true of evolution? Is evolution not an unproven theory; thus, why is it considered good science and appropriate for teaching in public schools?
According to the Apostle Paul, Judge Jones is an order of fries short of a Happy Meal. In Romans 1:19-22, Paul teaches that an intricately designed creation is proof positive of an intelligent Creator. To deny it, according to Paul, is both idiotic and inexcusable. Any sane, rational person knows that intricately designed things do not come into existence by accident, but only by intelligent design. Anyone believing otherwise is a fool, as Paul points out in verse 22.
I for one am sick and tired of fools who pretend to hold the intellectual high ground over Christians. From their pompous perches on the ivory towers of academia they peer down their noses at those in pews and pulpits. Snidely they insist that the saints prove to them the existence of God. Yet, like the Pharisees of old, who continuously asked Jesus for a sign while He healed the sick, cast out demons, fed the multitudes, and raised the dead all around them, these modern-day Christ-rejecters are also blinded by darkened hearts to the proofs of Christ that surround them.
Instead of us proving to others that there is a God, let’s let others prove to us that there isn’t. The truth is: unbelievers cannot disprove God’s existence to us anymore than we can prove God’s existence to them. We both live by faith. They believe that there is no God; we believe that there is. If they are right and we are wrong, we’ve lost nothing. But if we are right and they are wrong, they’ve lost everything.
Evolutionists assure us that their proof is coming. Sooner or later, they guarantee us that some species is going to evolve into another. Though it may take a couple of billion years, it’s eventually bound to happen. When it does, their faith will become sight, their theory will become fact, and their nemesis, Christian Fundamentalism, will be proven false. It’s hard to see, however, how such an argument concedes the intellectual high ground to believers in Darwin over believers in Christ, especially when you consider the fact that Christians can make a similar argument of their own. Can we not assure the world that our proof is coming? Soon Jesus Christ will come again. When He does, our faith will become sight, the Bible will be proven true, and evolution will be exposed for being the foolishness that it is.
